Save money at retail stores and restaurants using eBay!
You can save money at local stores and restaurants with eBay! There are two main ways to do this.
Gift Cards
The first way you can easily save money is with Gift Cards and Gift Certificates! Many stores and restaurants offer gift cards. If a business offers gift cards, chances are you can find them on eBay! Right off, many people assume gift cards have to be part of some kind of scam. It’s hard to imagine why someone would sell a gift card for less than its value. But, the answer is very simple.
Imagine it’s your birthday. Several of your extended family and friends give you gift cards so you can buy your own gift, but you are saving for a car. You would rather have money, but money is so impersonal (yet for some reason gift cards aren’t…). In this situation, many would much rather trade their gift cards for cash by simply listing them on eBay. If you are planning to buy a new TV at Best Buy, why not buy a Best Buy gift card on eBay and save money? Buying gift cards on eBay will save you about 15% on average! Save today so that you can spend tomorrow!
Virtually all major retail establishments accept gift cards (most of which never expire). Examples of stores accepting gift cards: Red Lobster, Gap, Old Navy, Starbucks, Macy’s, Banana Republic, Suncoast, Office Max, American Eagle, Blockbuster Video, Olive Garden, Wendy’s, Linens and Things, iTunes, Cracker Barrel, Staples, Express, Papa Johns, Abercrombie & Fitch, Ruby Tuesday, TJ Max, Pier 1, Sears, Bath and Body Works, Dillards, JC Penny, Borders, Toys r Us, Marshalls, Amazon.com
Should I only buy new gift cards? What about those odd values like $312.45?
If you are buying the card for yourself, and not giving it to someone as a gift, then all you need be concerned with is the value of the card. If you are planning to give the gift card as a present, normally you wouldn’t want to give an ‘odd-valued’ card. In this case though you have nothing to fear; you can use the gift card purchased from eBay to buy gift cards! To a merchant, a gift card is just like a credit card. If you bought a gift card with $312.45 left on it, you can buy a $400 gift card using the eBay card and pay the remainder with cash. Some gift cards on eBay are used, but many are actually cards with “store credit” that the seller got for returning merchandise. If you take back merchandise without a receipt at many places (such as Wal-Mart or Home Depot), you get a card with store credit. These cards are just as good as gift cards, and usually go for less on eBay because they don’t look all shiny. So don’t pay more for new, shiny cards, when you can simply use any gift card you have purchased on eBay to buy the new and shiny ones at the store! And don’t worry about multiple cards with odd amounts in one auction. Just be concerned with the total value of the cards.
While extremely rare, there are a few scrupulous individuals who would want to separate you from your cash by selling worthless and/or depleted gift cards. If this is a concern to you, don’t worry, there is an easy way to make sure the card has not been used. Simply ask the seller of the gift card if the PIN number protector has been scratched off (this is usually located in the bottom right of the card). If the PIN number has not been revealed yet, you can be 100% safe that the card is valid and has not been used. Keep in mind that most of the cards with PIN numbers exposed are not scams but rather they have been checked for their balance before they put the card on eBay. Just make sure the pin is not shown in any pictures, as the value will certainly be gone in minutes.
Coupons
The second way to save money is to buy coupons! eBay is loaded with 10% and 15% off coupons for popular stores, and also special deals such as $20-$50 off your purchases. At Home Depot or Lowe’s, a 10% off coupon could easily SAVE you $400. Of course you want to check your local paper first, but you’re not likely to find a 10% off coupon for Home Depot in the paper. Usually they give those away only when you apply for a credit card at the store.
You can find coupons for companies such as Barnes and Noble, Home Depot, Lowe’s, Best Buy, Target, and more on eBay!
Look for expiration dates! Most coupons will have some kind of expiration date. If the seller doesn’t show the expiration date, make sure to ask him before you bid! Don’t buy something if it expires tomorrow. Stick to coupons with at least a month left to give yourself time to use it.
Shop online instead of the store? If you are shopping at stores online, ask the seller if he will send your gift card number and pin (or coupon code) via e-mail while you wait for the card in the mail. That way you can shop right away! I bought a Barnes and Noble 10% discount coupon and gift card and a few minutes later I had saved $60 on an online order.
Don’t forget to include shipping! Make sure you consider the shipping charges when buying coupons or gift cards. Many offer free shipping, but not all, so just be conscious of what the shipping is for the item you want.
So there you have it! Two easy ways to save money at local retail stores, online shopping, and restaurants using eBay! You can find some great deals on gift cards, so just keep your eye out! I recently bought a $500 Starbucks gift card for $420 with free shipping! That’s a great deal for me as I drink Starbucks every day.
